UK Market for Kitchen Furniture

In the UK the kitchen furniture market is fiercer than ever. There have been modest increases in both volume and value terms in the period since 1999, even increasing sales in 2005 which differs versus the trend for household furniture generally. Competition has remained fierce throughout the industry, and several smaller companies have also gone into receivership.

£4860m of total sales was reached in 2005, compared to £4995m in 2004 and £4850m in 2003. Total industry sales declined by 2.6% in 2005, with producer prices increasing by around 1-2% during the year. Total sales of kitchen furniture reached £1100m in 2005, compared to £1070m in 2004 and £1040m in 2003; the kitchen furniture group accounts for 23% of the total household furniture market.

n volume terms the total number of fitted kitchen furniture installations has increased slowly in recent years, reaching over 1,020,000 units in 2005, compared to 974,000 units in 2004 and 938,000 units in 2003.

Imports of kitchen furniture totalled £81m in 2005, compared to £77.4m in 2004 and £78.2m in 2003. The penetration rate for such products within the UK market is currently almost 7.5% in value terms. Total sales of kitchen furniture are expected to reach £1140m in 2006 and £1190m in 2007, compared to the level of £1100m achieved in 2005.
